Mr Muti Abulafi is Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at based at Croydon University Hospital (CUH), with over 30 years experience in his field.
Mr Abulafi studied Medicine at the University of Cairo and went on to attain fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in 1988. He further achieved a Master of Surgery (MS) degree from the University of London in 1993 for his research into the role of intraoperative photodynamic therapy in colorectal cancer. Mr Abulafi completed his surgical training at the Royal London and St Thomas' Hospitals and was appointed as a consultant at CUH in 1996.
Mr Abulafi holds a special interest in colorectal cancer and he currently leads the cancer multi-disciplinary team at CUH and has previously been Director of cancer services for 8 years. He also currently chairs the Colorectal Cancer Pathway Group of the Royal Marsden Partners Accountable Cancer Network. He has previously been a member of the Clinical Board of the London Cancer Alliance, the London Early Diagnosis Implementation group and the Endoscopy Strategy Sub-group for London. He has been a past member of the London Zone Cancer Peer Review reference group, the cancer project Expert Reference Panel for Common Cancers and General Care, and the research and audit committee of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.
Outside his clinical practice, Mr Abulafi has extensively published on colorectal cancer and cancer genetics. He is lead investigator of the NICE FIT study, looking at the role of the FIT test in colorectal cancer. He is the founder and co-convenor of the annual M25 Colorectal Masterclass, a colorectal surgery training programme for trainee surgeons.
