About

Mr. Khalid Ikram is a highly experienced consultant ophthalmologist, with over 20 years of experience in his field. He completed his initial medical training at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, graduating in 1991. Following this, he went on to train in ophthalmic surgery, under excellent mentorship, at a number of leading UK hospitals, in Southampton and Oxford. He subsequently undertook his subspecialty fellowship in corneal and refractive procedures at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. Uniquely for a fellowship in the UK, he was able to be trained in both laser vision correction (excimer laser) and also specialised intraocular surgery; adding to his already extensive professional portfolio.

Mr. Ikram took up his NHS consultant post in 2002, largely based at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport. In addition to this work, he is also an honorary consultant at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH), one of the largest ophthalmic teaching & training centers in Europe.

Mr. Ikram is a passionate educator and works closely in the teaching and training of junior ophthalmic surgeons and was the Royal College of Ophthalmologists tutor for ophthalmology at Stepping Hill Hospital, where he is currently one of the lead consultants for ophthalmic surgery; a testament to his excellence in clinical practice. As a college tutor, Mr. Ikram also sat on the regional specialist training committees, selecting individuals for advanced ophthalmic surgical training in the North-West as well as monitoring, assessing, and appraising their progress.

Mr. Ikram has a particular interest in improving the standards of assessment and planning for cataract and refractive lens surgery and has run teaching conferences in preoperative biometry at both a national and international level, talking to large audiences as an expert in his field.

Having extensive experience in general ophthalmic care and specialising in small incision cataract surgery, Mr. Ikram has further developed considerable expertise in the refractive aspects of this type of surgery. He is very experienced in a large variety of refractive surgery techniques (corneal excimer laser and intraocular lens surgery) for the management of conditions such as myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), and presbyopia (age related reduction in the eye’s ability to focus on near targets).

The new era of mask-wearing has increased the frustrations and inconvenience felt by those dependent upon spectacles. Mr. Ikram specialises in ocular surgery to reduce the need for spectacle wear and hence make these aspects of life a little less uncomfortable.
