Mr Gautam Mehra is a Consultant Gynaecologist and Gynaecological Oncologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and he also sees patients privately, including at The Lister Hospital and The London Bridge Hospital.
Mr Mehra graduated in 1996 and completed core training in gynaecology in London and various London tertiary centres, including St Bartholomew’s, St George’s, Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea & Hammersmith Hospitals. He has completed advanced training in complex gynaecological pelvic surgery, including laparoscopic surgery. In 2012, he completed training at two cancer centres, Guy’s and St Thomas’ and The Kent Oncology Centre in Maidstone. He was appointed a Consultant at his present hospital in 2014.
Mr Mehra leads the Rapid-Access one stop outpatient clinic and the gynaceology group in the genetic clinic for BRCA mutation for those at higher risk of gynaecological cancer and provides counselling and treatment options. He also is a specialist in fertility preserving options for gynaecological cancers. His further interests include robotic surgery and pursuing a PhD in robotics at King's College. Mr Mehra is the lead for robotic surgery in Gynaecology at Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital (GSTT) and introduced the robotic programme at GSTT.
His other research areas include laparoscopic surgery in gynaecology and gynaecological cancers, new techniques of sentinel lymph node detection in gynaecological cancers and fertility preserving treatments. He was the gynaecology lead (Principal Investigator) for the 100K Genome research project and is currently the Principal Investigator for PROTECTOR multicenteric reserach trial at Guy's and St Thomas'. He has published extensively on both gynaecology and gynaecological Oncology and is also co-author of a textbook on laparoscopic surgery.
Mr Mehra is a senior colposcopist accredited with BSCCP since 2007, advising on cervical smears and treatment of abnormal cervical cells. He is member of a wide range of medical societies including the British Gynaecological Cancer Society (BGCS), British & Irish Association of Robotic Surgeons (BIARGS), British Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE), European Society of Gynaecological Oncologist (ESGO), International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS), European Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy (ESGE), American Association of Gynaecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL), Delhi Gynaecological Endoscopists society (DGES), Federation of Obstetrics & Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI).
Gautam was awarded the International Fellowship for Indian College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (ICOG) in 2012 and is currently the President of the London Chapter for Federation of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists of India - FOGSI.
Gautam has been an invited speaker at several international scientific meetings and published his research in several Gynaecology and Oncology international journals. He has trained senior consultants and trainees through live surgical training workshops and is currently faculty on a number of training courses in Gynaecology, Minimal Access (Key-hole) Surgery & Gynaecological Oncology in the UK and abroad. He is currently the preceptor for Advanced Training Skills Module in Gynaecological Oncology in London deanery for postgraduate doctors.
