Mr Andrew Coombes is a Consultant Eye Surgeon at Barts Health NHS Trust (appointed 2003). He qualified as a doctor, MBBS, from St Bartholomew’s Medical College (1991) having won several prestigious prizes and having also undertaken an immunology BSc at St. Thomas' Hospital (1989).
His NHS base is at the Royal London Hospital where he is Adnexal service lead (Facial trauma multidisciplinary team member) and Cataract and Corneal service lead. He is the College Tutor and Education Supervisor having previously been Department Lead Clinician (2004-16) and Trust Ophthalmology Clinical Director (2012-16).
Mr Coombes' subspecialty interests include Oculoplastic (eyelid surgery including cosmetic procedures), lacrimal (tear drainage) & orbital surgery [Fellowships at Sydney Eye Hospital, Australia and Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, London] as well as Cataract and Corneal surgery [Fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London]. He has published widely in scientific journals as well as having written and contributed to several books (notably in the field of cataract and trauma). He is actively involved in teaching both under- and post-graduates and is regularly invited to lecture, particularly on the subject of ocular and orbital trauma.
In addition to his sub-speciality interests, he has a broad ophthalmic experience including glaucoma, medical retina, uveitis, strabismus, paediatrics and neuro-ophthalmology subspecialities (Ophthalmology SpR Rotation: Moorfields Eye Hospital, St.George's NHS Trust and SW Thames Region).
