Dr Jonathan Houghton has extensive clinical experience in the assessment and management of musculoskeletal pain and sports-related conditions, treating individuals across a wide range of activity levels, including physically active populations, elite athletes, and occupational groups with high physical demands. His clinical focus includes tendon-related disorders, using ultrasound and UTC scanning for diagnosis, alongside ultrasound-guided injections and extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) as part of treatment pathways. He runs a dedicated one-stop clinic for Achilles and patellar tendon conditions.
Dr Houghton manages a broad spectrum of upper and lower limb overuse injuries, running-related conditions, bone stress injuries, adolescent overuse presentations, hip and groin pain, exercise-induced leg pain, and rehabilitation following injury. His rheumatology interests include gout, inflammatory spinal disorders, and inflammatory joint conditions affecting younger and athletic individuals.
He works within a multidisciplinary framework, collaborating closely with physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors, pain specialists, and orthopaedic surgeons to support coordinated care. His clinical approach incorporates functional rehabilitation and promotes physical activity as part of management plans for musculoskeletal injury and persistent pain.
Dr Houghton has held senior roles in sports medicine, including serving as Head of the Wales Medical Team during the EURO 2016 tournament. He continues to provide medical support to Wales Football and Surrey County Cricket Club and acts as a consultant to The Royal Ballet.
His areas of specialist practice include ESWT, viscosupplement injections, PRP injections, Achilles and patellar tendon pain, general tendon disorders, stress fractures and bone pain, hip and groin conditions, running injuries, and exertional leg pain.
