Dr John Meenan is a highly experienced Consultant Gastroenterologist who takes a proactive, patient-focused approach to care - aiming to begin treatment alongside arranging any necessary investigations. He supports patients with a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, including bloating and gas, altered bowel habits, abdominal pain, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), acid reflux, rectal bleeding, and concerns around bowel cancer risk.
Dr Meenan offers flexible consultation options, including telephone appointments where appropriate, recognising that many conditions do not require a hospital visit. He also prioritises efficient follow-up, often communicating results and reports via email to minimise unnecessary travel and reduce costs. Where possible, he avoids invasive tests and will suggest suitable alternatives. For self-paying patients or those with limited insurance, he can also advise on tests that may be accessed via an NHS GP.
He is recognised by Bupa’s Open Referral and Platinum services, where over 90% of patients rate both the consultant and quality of care as very good or excellent. He also participates in a similar scheme with AXA. His endoscopy outcomes are independently audited every six months and consistently exceed national standards. Independent patient feedback is also published on the PHIN website, where he maintains a recommendation rate of over 99%.
Dr Meenan has a particular interest in endoscopy, colonoscopy, and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), an advanced technique that enables detailed imaging of organs surrounding the stomach, including the pancreas.
He is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, London, where he previously served as Head of Department for six years, leading improvements in care delivery in collaboration with patients and GPs. He has also chaired the UK and Ireland EUS Users’ Group and served on the International Committee of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
Dr Meenan qualified with Honours from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1986. He completed specialist training in gastroenterology in Dublin, Amsterdam, and London. His academic work includes a PhD from the University of Amsterdam focused on the immunology of inflammatory bowel disease, and an MD from Trinity College Dublin on large bowel folate metabolism. He has published extensively in these fields, as well as in endoscopic ultrasound.
He continues to develop his expertise through international collaborations in Japan, France, and Germany, and by presenting at global medical conferences. He has been awarded the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy’s prestigious “Teachers Award” twice, in 2007 and 2013, and is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of both England and Ireland.
