Dr Arun Bhaskar is a Consultant in Pain Medicine practising in London and across the south of England, with extensive experience in the assessment and treatment of complex pain disorders. His clinical focus includes neuropathic pain, cancer-related pain, visceral and pelvic pain, alongside advanced interventional procedures and neuromodulation. He also has specialist expertise in supporting patients with challenging cancer pain who require opioid management, including those with opioid dependence.
He qualified in medicine at the University of Kerala in India before completing his higher specialist training in the UK through the Northwest Deanery. Dr Bhaskar began his consultant career at The Christie in Manchester, where he founded and developed the Pain Service. During this time and subsequently, he has played a key role in multiple clinical trials involving cancer pain and chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, while also contributing to the development of novel interventional approaches for refractory cancer pain.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Bhaskar is actively involved in professional education. He teaches internationally as faculty for programmes such as the European Pain School and acts as an examiner for both the European Diploma in Pain Medicine and the FIPP examination for the World Institute of Pain. His leadership experience includes serving as Chair of the Northwest Pain Clinicians, contributing to scientific committees for the European Pain Federation Congress in 2017 and the Spinal Interventional Society meeting in London in 2018, and representing the Faculty of Pain Medicine on the Palliative Medicine SAC at the Royal College of Physicians.
Dr Bhaskar also maintains an active academic profile. He writes a regular column for Pain News, serves as Section Editor for the Journal of Observational Pain Medicine, and publishes frequently in peer-reviewed journals. He has contributed to national and international guidance on interventional pain management, opioid prescribing, and cannabinoid use.
He currently leads the Pain Management Centre at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust as Head of Service, while continuing his private practice across London and the wider south of England.
