About

Mr. Aminul Ahmed is a Senior Lecturer in Neurosurgery and Consultant Neurosurgeon affiliated with King’s College Hospital. With a focus on pioneering research and innovative clinical practice, Mr. Ahmed's expertise lies in the realms of complex spinal surgery, traumatic brain injury (TBI), spinal cord injury (SCI), and advanced therapeutics for neurological diseases.

In his research endeavours, Mr. Ahmed looks into the use of advanced therapeutics for regeneration and repair following TBI and SCI. This includes investigating the potential of endogenous and transplanted stem cells, as well as gene therapy, including viral vector delivered treatments, in models of TBI and SCI. He is at the forefront of establishing translational pathways for the application of advanced gene therapies in neurological diseases, collaborating to translate these therapies into first-in-human studies. Utilising primary live human neural tissue for research, Mr. Ahmed aims to foster broader collaborations within the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) to advance the field of neurosurgery.

In his clinical practice, Mr. Ahmed specialises in complex spinal surgery, including various conditions such as back pain, neck pain, sciatica, disc problems, degenerative spinal disease, spinal tumours, and spinal trauma. His approach to patient care emphasises thorough discussions, consideration of all treatment options, and shared decision-making. Mr. Ahmed utilises minimally invasive techniques and cutting-edge technologies to ensure safer surgical outcomes for his patients.

Mr. Ahmed's academic background includes academic surgical training during medical school, a PhD, and two specialist complex spine fellowships in London, in addition to an international research fellowship in Miami. His research interests encompass neurotrauma, stem cell therapies, and gene therapies, earning him recognition through several prestigious awards, including the 'Arris and Gale Lectureship' from the Royal College of Surgeons.

Beyond his clinical and research endeavours, Mr. Ahmed is deeply committed to education and supervises PhD students in both clinical and basic sciences research.
