Mr Stefanos Almpanis is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at The Lister Hospital in private practice and he holds an NHS post at North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust.
Stefanos is an experienced Endo-Urologist and General Urologist with expertise in medical and surgical treatment, testing and prevention of kidney, ureteric and bladder stones. He also assesses and treats endoscopically haematuria, bladder tumours, benign prostatic and urethral problems, bladder infections, chronic prostatitis, pelvic / bladder / prostate / testicular pain, lumps of the scrotum and testes and phimosis in the adult population.
His special interests cover complex and day case endoscopic laser and percutaneous minimally invasive surgery for kidney, ureteric and bladder stones, endoscopic and laser surgery for cancer of the bladder, the ureter and the pelvicalyceal system, percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (small key hole surgery) for larger kidney stones, an expert in ESWL (outpatient shock wave treatment that breaks stones without an operation) and general urological procedures like endoscopic diagnostic and curative procedures for bladder tumours, enlarged prostate, tight urethra.
Stefanos graduated in Medicine in 1994, completed his urological training at Sismanogleion Hospital in Athens, a tertiary centre of excellence, accredited by the European Urological Association. He earned honours in the National Board exams for Urological Speciality Accreditation and international (European Urological Association -EAU) exams, becoming a Fellow of the European Urological Association in 2002. In 2003, he successfully presented his PhD Thesis in bladder cancer.
Continuing his training at Chelsea & Westminster NHS Trust and The Bart's & The London NHS Trust, Stefanos received training funding from Bart's Urology Department to become the first Endourology Fellow at Bart's & The London NHS Trust.
Stefanos has a substantive academic profile, having been appointed Senior Lecturer in Urology at The National University of Athens Medical School from 2008-2010. He has contributed to over 30 peer-reviewed papers, presented posters at more than 100 international conferences and served as a tutor in international training courses in Stone Surgery. He is a tutor for specialist nurses and has active training and educational activities for trainee doctors, also serving as a reviewer for the Journal of Endourology.
Acknowledging his contributions, Stefanos received clinical excellence award for his work in developing Stones Services; since 2012, he has led the Stone Service Improvement Project (SSIP) at North Mid Hospital, where more than 600 stone procedures are performed every year, with state of the art instruments are used and an onsite ESWL suite is working since 2018. He has held various leadership roles, including Clinical Governance, Audit and Clinical Lead, Clinical Director and Stones Services Lead. Stefanos represents his Trust in national quality improvement projects such as GIRFT (Getting It Right First Time) and serves as the North Mid Trust's Clinical Practice Group Lead for Stones, Haematuria and Bladder Cancer.
