About

Professor Mike Thomson is a Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist and Interventional Endoscopist with over 35 years of experience. He is highly qualified in the field of paediatrics, with specific expertise in gastroenterology and hepatology. He has many years of experience as a consultant at leading children's hospitals in London and Sheffield.

Professor Thomson received his medical training in Aberdeen, after which he relocated to Yorkshire. He spent the first four or five years of his career there, before returning home to Brisbane to train in Paediatric Gastroenterology. During this time, he also undertook research for his Medical Doctorate in Nutrition and Energy expenditure in Cystic Fibrosis. Professor Thomson is highly skilled in endoscopy and all other facets of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, with extensive experience in managing a world-renowned Paediatric Liver Transplant Programme.

Following this work in Brisbane, he returned to the United Kingdom in 1994 and spent a significant amount of time at Birmingham Children's Hospital. In November 1995, he took up a post at the Royal Free Paediatric Gastroenterology Unit, which had been established by Professor John Walker-Smith - one of the pioneers in paediatric gastroenterology.

Professor Thomson continues to work privately in both Sheffield and London, whilst also leading the National Centre of Paediatric Endoscopy Training - which trains fellows from all over the world. In addition to this, he has single-handedly built up the UK's most comprehensive small bowel investigation service for children. This involves wireless capsule endoscopy and enteroscopy; two areas in which he is highly knowledgeable. Consequently, his expertise spans across all aspects of paediatric gastroenterology.

Professor Thomson has played a leading role in the use of minimally invasive endoscopy for diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease in children. He gives lectures on these topics at national and international conferences frequently each year. In addition, he provides expert medical advice to the parent-run organisation Living with Reflux.
