Professor David O'Brart is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and the President of the UK and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He qualified as an Ophthalmic Surgeon in 1990 and trained in corneal and small-incision cataract surgery. He received a Doctorate in Medicine from the United Medical and Dental Schools, University of London. After completing his ophthalmic surgical training at St. Thomas' and Addenbrooke's in Cambridge, he undertook a fellowship with Professor Weinreb at the Shiley Eye Centre in San Diego, where he studied advanced techniques in glaucoma. Prof O'Brart has held several prestigious positions, including past President and treasurer of the UK and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, council member and secretary of the British Society of Refractive Surgeons, and past-president and secretary of the Southern Ophthalmological Society. He is also a co-opted board member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. His research interests include refractive surgery, cornea and external eye disease, cataract surgery, and glaucoma, and he has an international reputation in these fields. His expertise includes refractive eye surgery, complex small incision cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, corneal grafting, cataracts, glaucoma, dry eye syndrome, corneal disease, and lazy eye.
