Mr Richard Sainsbury is a Consultant Breast and Oncoplastic Surgeon who has over 40 years experience in the NHS, most recently at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust and Isle of Wight NHS Primary Care Trust. He now works solely in the private sector at a number of locations, including The Harley Street Clinic.
He is trained in all aspects off breast disease, including reduction and augmentation. He was also one of the proponents off Sentinel node biopsy, when it was introduced in the 1990s.
Mr Sainsbury qualified in 1977 from University of Newcastle upon Tyne and attained an MD with distinction in 1986. He has previously worked as a Consultant Surgeon in Huddersfield for 12 years. He also worked for the Royal Free and University College Medical School, where he was Senior Lecturer, then Reader and Honorary Consultant Surgeon and Head of Breast Services at UCH since 2007, before taking the role at Southampton and IoW.
He retains his ongoing research programme at UCL concerning the mechanisms of breast cancer and he was involved in advising government bodies on the optimisation of breast services. He has also written several books and over 200 scientific papers on breast cancer.
Mr Sainsbury's research interests include cell cycle control mechanisms, delay and outcome and Echotherapy for benign breast lesions.
