About

Dr. Bode Ensam is a seasoned Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist practicing at The Harborne Hospital. His specialized areas include inherited cardiac conditions (ICC), sudden arrhythmic death syndromes (SADS), sports cardiology, and managing arrhythmias during pregnancy.

Graduating from Warwick Medical School in 2007, Dr. Ensam pursued general medical training in Dorset and Hampshire, achieving membership at the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in 2011. He earned a coveted national training position in Cardiology, receiving training in the West Midlands, and completed a clinical and research fellowship in ICC and sports cardiology at St George’s Hospital, London, mentored by Professor Elijah Behr.

During his tenure at St George’s, Dr. Ensam honed his expertise in rare electrical cardiac conditions such as Brugada Syndrome, Long-QT syndrome (LQTS), Catecholaminergic Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia (CPVT), unexplained cardiac arrest, and recurrent syncope. As a Cardiac Risk in the Young UK (CRY-UK) fellow, he expanded his skills in assessing cardiovascular health in elite athletes. Securing research funding exceeding £300,000 from the British Heart Foundation, he delved into studying Brugada Syndrome and assessing sudden unexplained cardiac death victims and their families.

Returning to the West Midlands, Dr. Ensam underwent further training in advanced invasive cardiac electrophysiology. Following the completion of his cardiology training, he served as a senior EP fellow at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, focusing on invasive treatments for arrhythmic disorders. During this period, he performed almost 300 catheter ablation procedures and 150 pacemaker/defibrillator implants within a year. His outstanding contributions led to his appointment as a consultant cardiologist specializing in cardiac electrophysiology and inherited cardiac conditions at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, in September 2022.

Beyond his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Ensam is actively engaged in research and teaching. He has authored numerous papers in prestigious journals and presented his work at international conferences. In his spare time, Dr. Ensam maintains a strong interest in sports cardiology and participates in pre-participation cardiac screening for elite and high-performance amateur athletes. He collaborates with prominent sports organizations including the Football Association, The Rugby Football Union, British Athletics, The English Cricketing Board, British Triathlon, The Football Association, British Swimming, and the English Institute of Sport.
