Haematology Transplant Unit

Comprehensive care

Our JACIE accredited, quality assured, Haematology Transplant Unit is the only specialist facility of its kind in the Manchester region. Haematology is a complex area of medicine that requires the expertise of a team of haematology specialists, combined with the facilities to support them in  safely delivering a wide range of treatment options.

Bone marrow or stem cell transplant is a specialised but standard treatment option for many blood cancers, disorders and more recently some auto immune diseases such as multiple sclerosis. There are different types of stem cell transplants, the most common being:

- Autologous transplant which uses your own stem cells

- Allogeneic transplant which uses a donor's cells

Depending on your diagnosis, you may be able to use your own stem cells for the transplant. If you are not able to do this, then a donor is required. A donor can be a family member who is considered a good match (related donor), or an unrelated donor who has decided to donate their stem cells to the British Bone Marrow Registry.

Your consultant and medical team will discuss your diagnosis and treatment options with you in detail, so that you can make an informed decision about your care.
