About surgery for endometriosis
Endometrial tissue is usually only found in the womb. Endometriosis is when the endometrial tissue spreads outside the womb to other parts of the body.
The result of this, is the surrounding tissue can become inflamed and cause pain and scarring it can also effect other parts of the body which are in contact with the womb such as your bladder. When this happens, our specialists can carry out a laparoscopic excision to remove the endometriosis.
NEED TO KNOW
An laparoscopic excision of endometriosis is usually carried out under general anaesthetic. Your consultant surgeon will start by making a few small incisions in your naval area, and will use these cuts to insert a laparoscope (a thin telescope with a camera and light at the end) to examine your affected organs. Your consultant surgeon will make additional incisions in your lower abdomen and use this opening to remove the endometriosis.
Your consultant surgeon will explain the procedure to you during a pre-surgery screening, which will most likely take place on a date before the procedure. Like all procedures, there may be some risks and side effects involved.
These will be explained to you. As you'll be receiving a general anaesthetic, it's likely you'll be asked to limit your food and drink intake in the hours leading up to your surgery. You may also be asked to put on special tights or socks on to prevent blood clots during the surgery.
Your consultant or nurse specialist will let you know when you can get back to your usual routine, including work or exercise.
