MEET THE TEAM

Meet Nina, one of our brilliant specialists
Everyone in our paediatric urology team is as passionate about taking care of your child’s mental wellbeing as they are about looking after their physical health. A big part of that is making sure that all the children we look after feel informed about any procedures they need to have and are comfortable asking questions so they feel safe.

Join our young reporter Maya-Lee as she quizzes Nina,  one of our Paediatric Dietitians at The Portland Hospital, to find out what she does and why she cares so much about what children eat.

What to expect

Our specialist team is here to make your child’s experience as reassuring and comfortable as possible, from the moment you first visit us through diagnosis, treatment and any ongoing aftercare they may need.

The overview below gives you a good idea of what to expect but your child’s own journey will vary, depending on their condition and any procedure they may have. If you have any questions or concerns, our friendly and compassionate team is here to help.

01

Initial consultation

Your child’s consultant urologist will always start with a conversation and an initial physical examination and assessment. They’ll want to talk to your child about any symptoms they’re experiencing to help them understand the challenges they’re facing and likely causes. You’ll have the chance to share your child’s medical history, ask questions and address any concerns you may have.

02

Thorough tests

Your child’s consultant will then recommend that they have a series of tests and scans which may include urine and blood tests, imaging such as an ultrasound or MRI scan and bladder function (urodynamic) assessments.

03

Results and follow up

These tests and scans will deliver the detailed information your child’s consultant needs to make a clear and accurate diagnosis. You’ll have a follow-up consultation, explaining everything to you, in language that your child can understand.

04

Treatment plan

Your specialist consultant will then shape a personalised treatment plan for your child. They’ll work together with other urology specialists in a multi-disciplinary team and take the time to clearly discuss the options, risks and benefits with you.

Paediatric urology FAQs

A paediatric urologist specialises in diagnosing and treating issues that affect a baby, child or young person’s urinary system and genitals, sometimes known as their genitourinary tract. These include organs such as their kidneys, ureters (the tube that carries urine from their kidneys to their bladder) and their bladder.
Our specialists provide advice and support for a range of conditions affecting your unborn child’s kidney, bladder and genital region, including posterior urethral valves, hydronephrosis, kidney obstruction, kidney reflux, hypospadias and other penile anomalies, scrotal swelling and undescended testes.

We specialise in diagnosing foetal abnormalities and in treating congenital genitourinary disorders.
A baby boy's testes (testicles) will form inside his abdomen while he’s still in the womb. They usually move down into his scrotum by 35 weeks of pregnancy. However sometimes one of the testes, or occasionally both, don’t descend and remain in your child’s abdomen. No-one is sure why.

This usually corrects itself three to six months after birth, but may need treatment otherwise. Our specialists are here to help.
Our expert teams are skilled at performing a whole range of surgical procedures including:
  • Circumcision
  • Orchidopexy
  • Hydrocele repair
  • Laparoscopic surgery
  • Cystoscopy
  • Hernia repairs
  • Posterior Ureteral Valves resection
  • Heminephrectomy
  • Nephrectomy
  • Hypospadias repair
  • Ileocystoplasty/bladder augmentation and formation Mitrofanoff
  • Antegrade Colonic Enema (ACE) stoma
  • Pyeloplasty
  • Ureteric Reimplanation
  • Kelly Operation
  • Reconstructive urology

Tom's story

Everything was taken care of from the moment we walked through the door. We didn’t have to worry about the basics, like finding somewhere to stay. All we had to think about was Tom, which made a huge difference to our peace of mind.
