Ms Julie Moore (née Backley) is a Specialist Respiratory Physiotherapist with over 20 years of experience in the assessment and management of respiratory conditions, with particular expertise in breathing pattern disorders in athletic populations. She works alongside Dr James Hull at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health, where they run a dedicated clinic for athletes with respiratory symptoms.
She completed a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy at the University of Northumbria, Newcastle upon Tyne in 1993 and was appointed to a consultant post at King’s College Hospital in London in 1999. During this time, Julie established a hospital-based pulmonary rehabilitation programme and later developed one of the UK’s first community pulmonary rehabilitation services. She went on to complete an MSc in Physiotherapy at Brighton University in 2005 and published research on exercise interventions for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Julie’s clinical practice includes breathing retraining using Buteyko and BradCliff techniques, pulmonary rehabilitation, post-COVID rehabilitation, inspiratory muscle training, airway clearance and cough control, and management of hyperventilation syndrome. She treats a wide range of respiratory conditions including asthma, bronchiectasis, COPD, breathing pattern disorders, and exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction.
She is a committee member of UK Physiotherapy for Breathing Pattern Disorders and is trained as both a Buteyko practitioner and BradCliff breathing specialist. Julie also lectures nationally, supporting physiotherapists in developing clinical skills for managing hyperventilation and dysfunctional breathing.
She holds a BSc in Physiotherapy from the University of Northumbria (1993) and an MSc in Physiotherapy from Brighton University (2005).
