What does an ultrasound tell us?

An ultrasound can be used to help diagnose conditions, for guidance during a variety of procedures, such as biopsies and monitor the progress of unborn babies. As soundwaves are used rather than radiation, an ultrasound scan is believed to be a safe procedure.

This type of scan is carried out using a small handheld device called an ultrasound probe, which gives off high-frequency sound waves. These sound waves (which can't be heard) bounce off different parts of the body to create a moving image which is displayed on a monitor while the scan is carried out.

  • Gastroenterology: Such as an endoscopic ultrasound which is an internal scan that allows a consultant to examine the organs and structures in the chest and abdomen
  • Cardiac: Such as a doppler scan which is used to estimate the flow of blood through the blood vessels
  • Gynaecology: Such as as a transvaginal ultrasound which assesses your pelvis for signs of any underlying gynaecology conditions
