ARTHROSAMID INJECTIONS AT HCA UK

Why choose us?
The NHS reports that nearly 20% of people over 45 years old are affected by knee osteoarthritis and we understand how joint pain can impact your daily activities, sports and exercise. We offer a wide range of treatments including non-surgical approaches such as ultrasound guided injections. An Arthrosamid injection can provide long lasting pain relief, and it’s administered by our leading musculoskeletal and knee specialists based in our outpatient centres and hospitals across the UK. You'll be in expert hands, with 97% of our orthopaedic patients rating our care as very good or excellent.
This ultrasound guided injection into the knee contains a non-biodegradable hydrogel that cushions and improves lubrication around your knee joint. This will reduce inflammation, stiffness and pain and can help to improve movement.

Because Arthrosamid hydrogel doesn’t degrade, you can often enjoy long-lasting pain relief with just a single injection. Patients can often still feel the benefits after a year or more.
Arthrosamid is a good option for anyone with moderate osteoarthritis who’s looking for long-term pain relief. It can also help you to delay knee replacement surgery if other pain medication and physiotherapy haven’t helped to control your pain levels.

While many patients can benefit from but Arthrosamid, it’s not recommended if you have inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis, gout or advanced arthritis (bone on bone). In each case, knee replacement is a more effective treatment.
Your knee will be cleaned prior to the injection to help prevent an infection developing when your skin’s surface is pierced. You'll then have a local anaesthetic to numb the area around it. The Arthrosamid injection is performed using a needle with the help of ultrasound to guide and target it. Once the needle is removed, a plaster will be placed over the injection site.

The whole procedure will typically take no more than 15 minutes.

THE ARTHROSAMID INJECTION PROCESS

What to expect
Our specialist orthopaedic and musculoskeletal consultants know just how painful and difficult it can be to live with osteoarthritis in your knee, and they’re here to help. You’ll get a fast, accurate treatment plan tailored to your needs.  From your first consultation through to recovering at home, your comfort and wellbeing are our first priorities. We’ll do what it takes to help you get back to living a more active life.

01

Initial consultation

If you have pain in your knee joint that hasn't responded to pain medication or physiotherapy, your GP or physiotherapist may refer you to an orthopaedic or sports and exercise medicine consultant to explore the next-level non-surgical options open to you. You can book in to see one of our specialists. They’ll ask about your medical history, your lifestyle and your general health to get a better view of any potential treatment options that could help you to delay or avoid knee replacement surgery.

02

Investigations and diagnosis

Your consultant will order imaging tests such as an ultrasound or an MRI scan. This will help them to look inside your knee joint in more detail and see if you have any early signs of osteoarthritis in your joint. You should get the results within 48 hours. Your consultant will then talk you through treatment options and whether they think that an ultrasound guided injection with Arthrosamid could help to alleviate your pain

03

Treatment

You’ll be positioned comfortably and after your knee has been sterilised with an antiseptic, your doctor will inject a local anaesthetic into your knee to numb the area.

Using an ultrasound for guidance, your doctor will carefully insert a needle into your knee joint space and inject a dose of Arthrosamid hydrogel. Once the injection is complete, your doctor will remove the needle, and a plaster will be applied to the injection site.

The whole procedure will typically take 10-15 minutes.

04

Post treatment

You should be able to go home shortly after the treatment. You can’t drive until the local anaesthetic wears off and this may take several hours, so it’s best to arrange for someone to take you home.

You’ll usually start to feel the benefit in terms of reduced stiffness and pain and some improved movement within a couple of weeks.

Arthrosamid injection FAQ

An Arthrosamid injection offers you three key advantages over other treatment options:
  • It’s non-surgical, so you can typically get back to your regular day-to-day activities
  • It’s minimally invasive – all you need is a single injection delivered under local anaesthetic
  • It offers you long-lasting relief from the pain of knee osteoarthritis
You’re free to leave immediately after the procedure and you should start to feel pain relief within the first two weeks. However, it’s best to rest for the first few days, to allow the injected area to settle.
Yes, it does. Clinical trials have shown that most patients notice a significant reduction in pain by week four, and that pain reduction was maintained in a follow-up appointment a year later.
No, it’s an injectable hydrogel. Unlike steroid injections which reduce inflammation, Arthrosamid works by providing cushioning within your knee joint. This can offer longer-term pain relief than a steroid injection.
Many patients can benefit from it, but it’s not recommended if you have inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis, or if you have gout.
You may feel some pain following the injection alongside swelling along the injection site. There’s also a chance that you’ll have an allergic reaction to the injection.
