TREATMENT FOR BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA (BPH)
A micro-invasive treatment effective in managing the symptoms of BPH
As men get older they can develop benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where their enlarged prostate is interfering with urine flow. The symptoms can be uncomfortable and difficult to manage and can include a frequent and urgent need to urinate, difficulty with urination, an inability to fully empty the bladder and weak urine flow.
Transperineal laser ablation of the prostate is a minimally invasive procedure to relieve lower urinary tract symptoms and reduce the size of the prostate while preserving sexual function and continence. It is a unique alternative for patients struggling with tablets but who do not want to have a radical prostatectomy surgery.
This procedure is FDA approved and NICE approved at the data collection phase.
Using the EchoLaser® system, you’ll have an ultrasound probe inserted into your rectum. This allows us to see your prostate on a screen during the procedure. Two very fine fibres (measuring .8mm) are then inserted through your perineum and into the prostate itself. The laser is then delivered to the site through these wires.
Your consultant will discuss the procedure with you beforehand to assess whether it’s the right option for you, and to discuss whether you’ll have a local or light general anaesthetic.
Transperineal laser ablation of the prostate typically takes just an hour, so you'll usually be able to return home the same day. Initially, the ablated tissue will be swollen so you will need a catheter and you may experience some discomfort. In around six weeks, you will start to see benefits such as improved continence and sexual function from the procedure, which preserves your prostatic urethra and bladder neck, so although you may experience some discomfort, this is a step forward in long term outcomes.
