Investigations of the voice box

While under general anaesthetic your consultant will study your voice box, known as the larynx, with a small microscope. You will be asleep when the procedure is performed and this investigation will help your consultant to diagnose and treat any problems of the larynx that may be affecting your voice or your breathing.

Need to know

Your consultant will explain the procedure to you in detail and answer any questions that you might have and your anaesthetist will explain how the general anaesthetic works. If you have any existing medical problems, such as allergies, please tell your consultant. A

bout half an hour before the procedure you may have a pre-medication. This is a special medication which dries up any secretions, allowing your consultant to see your airway more clearly. It may be given as an injection or as a liquid medicine to drink.

Your consultant will tell you how you should prepare, but you may want to avoid things that irritate the voice box e.g. smoking, alcohol, or caffeine. You should also avoid eating or drinking in the hours before your anaesthetic.

You'll probably be required to stay overnight in the hospital following the procedure. You may have a sore throat and be prescribed some paracetamol to help manage this.

You'll also not be able to eat or drink anything for three hours after the procedure. Your consultant will see you later the same day to tell you what they found during the investigation.
