Dr Shalin Diwanji is a consultant in respiratory medicine with a clinical practice that spans complex respiratory disease, service development and research. He works within London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust and also sees private patients at The Wellington Hospital, The Harley Street Clinic and The Princess Grace Hospital.
He qualified in medicine in 2006 and completed his foundation training in India before relocating to the UK to pursue academic and clinical training in respiratory medicine. His research work led to the award of a Doctor of Medicine degree in 2010, based on his research into non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis. He subsequently completed higher specialist training in respiratory and general medicine, rotating through major London teaching hospitals including London Chest Hospital, The Royal London Hospital and St Bartholomew’s Hospital.
Dr Diwanji was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in 2019. Alongside his clinical duties, he has played a key role in service development and leadership. He established the Enhanced Respiratory Care Unit at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust, providing specialist care for patients with acute and chronic respiratory failure. He also co-chairs the Lung Cancer Multidisciplinary Team and has recently been appointed Clinical Director for Respiratory Medicine at the Trust.
A significant part of his work involves lung cancer care, including the delivery of lung cancer screening services that are not always readily available through standard NHS pathways. He works closely with colleagues across multiple specialties to ensure coordinated assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning for patients with suspected or confirmed lung cancer.
Dr Diwanji manages a wide spectrum of respiratory conditions, ranging from common presentations such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and respiratory infections to more complex disorders including bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease, sarcoidosis and respiratory failure. His practice also includes the assessment and management of chronic cough, breathlessness, wheeze, pulmonary embolism, pneumothorax, pulmonary nodules and sleep-related breathing disorders. Additional areas of work include tuberculosis, post-COVID respiratory symptoms, allergy assessment, smoking cessation support, fitness-to-fly assessments and advanced diagnostic procedures such as endobronchial ultrasound.
His research involvement continues alongside clinical practice. He is currently the principal investigator at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust for the PHOSP-COVID trial and acts as a sub-investigator for the TRIBE study. He is an active member of the British Thoracic Society, the European Respiratory Society and the Royal College of Physicians.
Dr Diwanji’s approach to respiratory medicine is grounded in recognising variation between individuals with similar conditions. His clinical work focuses on careful assessment and tailored management strategies, combining specialist expertise with collaborative, multidisciplinary care.
