Professor Sam Janes is a General and Respiratory Medicine Physician who consults at various locations, including The Physicians Clinic, Harley Street Diagnostic Center, The Princess Grace Hospital, and the Harley Street Clinic. He holds the position of Professor of Respiratory Medicine at University College Hospital, where he specializes in assessing patients with chest symptoms such as coughing and shortness of breath. He is the Head of the Respiratory Research Department at UCL and Vice Chair of the National Clinical Expert Group on Lung Cancer. He runs national trials, including the SUMMIT Study, which screens 25,000 people in London for lung cancer.
Prof Janes is an accomplished academic who won a Medical Research Council (MRC) Training Fellowship for a PhD and conducted post-doctoral research at Cancer Research UK Lincoln's Inn Fields Institute (now the Crick) working on cancer. He was awarded a highly competitive MRC Clinician Scientist award to move to UCL, where he leads a group focused on lung cancer development, early detection, and novel treatments for lung diseases. He has published over 150 manuscripts on lung disease in the best journals, including Nature, Science, and the New England Journal of Medicine.
Prof Janes has made significant contributions to practice-changing diagnostic trials for lung disease and the development of new drugs and therapies. He leads one of the country's largest trials called SUMMIT, which involves building four CT screening centres for lung cancer and delivering lung cancer screening for 25,000 people.
