Paul Goldsmith serves as a consultant general surgeon with a specialised focus on UGI surgery, specifically diseases of the oesophagus and stomach, at Manchester Foundation Trust. His appointment to this position took place in 2017.
A graduate of The University of Leeds, Paul underwent training in Yorkshire, earning an MD in "1H NMR spectrometric identification of biomarkers in renal transplantation." Following his training, he relocated to Manchester for higher surgical training and also spent a period of time in The Netherlands. Paul boasts a portfolio of over 30 publications and has presented his work both nationally and internationally.
In his current role as a consultant, Paul assumes the position of the general surgical lead clinician for the national emergency laparotomy audit. Additionally, he serves as the lead for frailty within general surgery, spearheading an NHS England pilot study for the care of patients undergoing abdominal operations with underlying co-morbidities. Actively participating in undergraduate teaching, he contributes to the education of aspiring medical professionals.
Paul has initiated the Reflux Centre at Spire Manchester, implementing a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach to address reflux conditions. This involves close collaboration with ENT, gastroenterology, and GI physiologists to ensure optimal treatment for this particular condition.
His scope of practice encompasses all aspects of general and emergency surgery, with a subspecialty interest in reflux/heartburn, regurgitation LINX, RefluxStop, oesophageal dysmotility, dysphagia, hernia (including hiatus, incisional, epigastric/ventral, and groin), gallstones, and endoscopy.
