Mr Christopher Chan is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon based at Barts NHS Trust. He sees patients privately at The Lister Hospital and The Harley Street Clinic, where he is also the lead colorectal surgeon for The Endometriosis Centre.
Mr Chan graduated from Guy's and St Thomas' Medical School in 1991 and then undertook surgical training in Cambridge and London, He was awarded an MRC Clinical Fellowship for work on pelvic floor dysfunction, which culminatd in a PhD. He continued with further sub-specialist colorectal training fellowships, which took place in Sydney, Paris and St Mark's Hospital in Harrow.
He has wide experience in elective and emergency surgery and expertise in open, laparoscopic and robotic techniques, specifically with complex colorectal diseases. These include Colorectal Cancer, Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Enterocutaneous Fistula, Intestinal Failure, Complex Anal Fistula, Anorectal and Pelvic Floor Problems, such as incontinence, evacuatory difficulty and constipation, and pelvic floor reconstruction.
His research interests include investigating new techniques for treating faecal incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction, ultra-low sphincter preserving resections and inflammatory bowel disease. In addition to his clinical work, Mr Chan is active in teaching and lecturing at all levels, including MBBS, MRCA and Intercollegiate FRCS examinations. He also speaks at national and international conferences.
