Dr. Gerald Coakley is a Consultant Rheumatologist and Physician who has been working at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, now part of Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust, since 2000. He covers all aspects of rheumatoid and inflammatory arthritis and is experienced in musculoskeletal pain disorders such as fibromyalgia. He has run an interdisciplinary service for people with chronic fatigue syndrome / myalgic encephalomyelitis since 2007 at Keats House, London Bridge.
Dr. Coakley qualified from the Royal London Hospital Medical School in 1989. Following this, he completed his postgraduate training in Nottingham and London, before undertaking an Arthritis Research Campaign Fellowship. He carried out in-depth research into Rheumatoid Arthritis and Felty's Syndrome at Guy's Hospital and this led to him obtaining a PhD in 2000.
He held the position as Director of Medical Education between 2003 and 2013, followed by Clinical Director for Dermatology, Neurology, and Rheumatology between 2013 and 2018 at Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust. He is currently a Trustee and National Chair of the Education and Training Committee for the British Society for Rheumatology.
He has published numerous papers in the areas of Felty's Syndrome and Septic Arthritis.
