Professor Mohamed A Imam (MD, MSc, D. SportMed, PhD, FRCS (Tr and Orth)) is an fellowship-trained surgeon in orthopaedics. His specialist areas of interest include sports injuries, upper limb surgery and complex trauma.
After completing his specialist training, Professor Imam undertook upper limb surgery fellowships at prestigious centres of excellence around the globe. This included fellowships at three globally renowned centres in the UK, the Wrightington Upper Limb Unit (Wrightington Hospital), the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and the acclaimed Rowley Bristow Orthopaedic Unit in Surrey, where he is currently based as a substantive consultant. He also completed a fellowship in complex trauma at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Taking his training further afield, Professor Imam embarked on a fellowship at Balgrist Orthopaedic University Hospital, Zurich, Switzerland, training with the highly renowned Professor Christian Gerber, a pioneer in modern shoulder surgery. He also undertook a complex trauma fellowship in the BGU Trauma Centre, Ludwigshafen, Germany and has also completed numerous travelling fellowships in Europe and the US, including fellowships at the Mayo Clinic, The Steadman Clinic and Stanford University. Owing to his proficiency in the field of orthopaedic surgery, Professor Imam has also been awarded multiple distinctive international awards.
In order to provide the best possible outcomes for his patients, Professor Imam implements an evidence-based and multidisciplinary approach when caring for his patients. He carries out his work alongside a committed and esteemed specialist team of physiotherapists, occupational hand therapists, radiologists and anaesthetists. Utilising the most recent technology, Professor Imam is proficient at diagnosing various different upper limb pathologies. His main specialties include arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery to treat multiple conditions such as frozen shoulder, tendonitis, arthritis, biceps injury, recurrent dislocations, rotator cuff tears, tennis elbow, stiff elbow and wrist problems. In addition to this, he performs all kinds of upper limb replacement surgery. Throughout all aspects of his work, Professor Imam lives by the ethos of providing top quality, patient-centred care for each patients based on the best available evidence, which may involve surgical or non-surgical treatment.
As a professor at the University of East London, Professor Imam is very passionate about education. He is also actively involved in a vast range of national and international research projects. He has widely published in the field of orthopaedics, having published over 70 publications in leading medical journals worldwide, authored two books, as well as written multiple textbook chapters focused on upper limb injuries. His current research interest is in the implementation of artificial intelligence in surgery.
