Mr Matteo Massanova

Mr Matteo Massanova is a Consultant Urological Surgeon with a specialist focus on prostate and bladder cancer and complex pelvic surgery. Over five years as a consultant, he has developed considerable expertise in minimally invasive techniques, particularly robotic surgery, having performed more than 500 robotic operations as the primary surgeon.

A distinctive aspect of his practice is his expertise in complex urinary reconstruction following bladder removal. He is currently the only surgeon in his area offering both robotic intracorporeal orthotopic neobladder reconstruction and robotic continent cutaneous urinary diversion following cystectomy.

His work in prostate and bladder cancer covers the entire treatment pathway, from investigation to definitive surgery. Diagnostic procedures include flexible cystoscopy and transperineal prostate biopsy, while surgical treatments include transurethral resection of bladder tumours (TURBT), radical prostatectomy and radical cystectomy with urinary diversion. He performs pelvic surgery using both open and robotic techniques, tailoring the approach to each patient's condition.

Beyond oncology, Mr Massanova has specialist experience in painful bladder disorders, including interstitial cystitis and ketamine-induced cystitis, also known as ketamine bladder. His wider urological practice encompasses kidney and urinary tract stones, benign prostatic hyperplasia, circumcision, vasectomy and hydrocele treatment.

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Massanova plays an active role in developing robotic surgical expertise among other specialists. As an official proctor for Intuitive Surgical, the company behind the da Vinci robotic surgical system, he provides training to surgeons undertaking robotic prostate and bladder procedures. He has trained more than 20 surgeons across the UK and Europe.

His operative experience includes over 400 robot-assisted radical prostatectomies and 150 radical cystectomies with urinary diversion, performed using either open or robotic approaches. He has also completed more than 750 general urological procedures, covering stone surgery, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), TURBT, circumcision, hydrocele repair, epididymal cyst removal, vasectomy and varicocele correction.

Mr Massanova also contributes to academic medicine as an Honorary Lecturer in Urology at the University of Naples Federico II. His research has produced multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals, with particular emphasis on robotic surgical techniques and the management of prostate and bladder cancer.
