About

Miss Marina Fernando is a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Broomfield Hospital, with specialist expertise in high-risk obstetrics, acute gynaecology, early pregnancy care and outpatient hysteroscopy. She is the departmental Clinical Lead and lead for Early Pregnancy and Acute gynaecology, working to improve the safety and quality of women’s healthcare services.

Alongside her local roles, Miss Fernando is the Regional Quality Improvement Lead at UCL Partners (Health Innovation Network, NHS), where she has successfully led major maternity programmes such as PReCePT (reducing cerebral palsy in preterm babies), BSOTS (improving maternity triage systems) and MEWS (tools to identify deteriorating mothers) across London and Essex.

After graduating from Barts and The London School of Medicine in 2005 and completing specialist training in North East and Central London, she began her consultant career at Homerton University Hospital. There, she introduced birth reflection clinics, improved postnatal care and ambulatory gynaecology department and developed services offering contraception immediately after childbirth — helping women access implants, coils, or oral contraceptives as part of routine postnatal care.

Her clinical interests include the management of menstrual disorders, postmenopausal health, gynaecology and early pregnancy scanning and outpatient gynaecological procedures such as out patient Hysteroscopy and outpatient surgical management of miscarriage where she focuses on improving patient comfort and experience. She has also played a key role in enhancing ambulatory gynaecology services, ensuring that women receive safe, effective care in outpatient settings in NHS and Private sector.

Miss Fernando is actively involved in teaching and mentoring medical students and junior doctors, and regularly presents her work at national and international conferences. She is passionate about combining clinical excellence with service innovation to improve women’s health at every stage of life.
