Dr Emma Shawkat is a Consultant Obstetrician and Sub-Specialist in Maternal and Fetal Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester. She completed her medical degree (MBChB) at The University of Manchester in 2006, followed by postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology within the North West Deanery. She subsequently undertook sub-specialty training in Maternal and Fetal Medicine and was awarded an MD for research into hypertension in pregnancy.
Dr Shawkat is Lead for Maternal Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital, where she manages pregnancies complicated by complex medical conditions including diabetes and renal disease. She provides antenatal care through both the Maternal Medicine Clinic and Velocity Clinic, supporting women with pre-existing diabetes referred from across the region.
She also leads the North West Maternal Medicine Network, contributing to service development aimed at improving maternal outcomes and patient experience. Within the Fetal Medicine Unit, Dr Shawkat performs detailed fetal anatomical assessments and invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, and intrauterine transfusions. Her clinical practice also includes management of high-risk and complex deliveries, including caesarean section.
