Dr Basil Issa is a senior Consultant Endocrinologist at Manchester University Foundation Trust. He has been a Consultant Endocrinologist since 1998 and in his practice, has developed the Endocrine services at both North Manchester General and Wythenshawe Hospitals.
Dr Issa has extensive experience in the management of all endocrine disorders including thyroid, parathyroid, pituitary, adrenal, gonadal and lipid disorders. As well as endocrine and diabetes disorders in pregnancy and the management of diabetes and its complications.
He undertook his postgraduate training in Manchester, obtaining a MRCP in 1992. He gained an interest in endocrinology and diabetes whist working as a registrar on the Wessex rotation. Following this, he undertook a Clinical Fellowship at the University of Wales, College of Medicine and completed his MD thesis titled "Mechanisms underlying hypothalamic desensitisation in the diabetic GK rat”. He was appointed Senior Registrar at the University Hospital of Wales in 1996, before taking up his consultant post in Manchester. In 2002, he was became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
Dr Issa has undertaken several leadership and educational roles in the NHS. His interest in both basic science and clinical research has been since he has completed his MD thesis at the University of Wales, College of Medicine. His current research interests include the utility of low energy diets in the management of diabetes, diabetes in pregnancy and adrenal disorders and tumours. Dr Issa has several publications in peer reviewed journals and has presentation at both national and international meetings.
