Dr. Barbara McGowan graduated in Biochemistry from Oxford in 1988 and worked as a Pharmaceutical Equity Analyst before studying Medicine at the Royal Free in London, graduating in 1998 with Merits. She was awarded a PhD from Imperial College in 2007 for her research on gut hormones and neuropeptides in appetite control. Appointed as a Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Diabetes and Endocrinology in 2009, Dr. McGowan’s specialties include thyroid disease, polycystic ovaries, hypogonadism, adrenal disease, pituitary disease, metabolic disorders, hormone imbalance, and managing complex obesity and co-morbidities associated with Type 2 Diabetes and the metabolic syndrome. She leads the obesity bariatric service and is actively involved in several professional associations, including being a Trustee of the Association for the Study of Obesity and the Metabolic and Obesity Endocrine Network Lead for the Society of Endocrinology.
