Mr. Benjamin Tan is a Consultant Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, where he joined the Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery unit in January 2017. He graduated with an MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery) from the University of Glasgow in 2003.
In 2012, Mr. Tan was awarded an MD (Doctorate in Medicine) from the University of Edinburgh, funded by a European Union research grant. His research into cancer cachexia led to several publications in medical journals.
Mr. Tan undertook specialist surgical training in the East Midlands in general and upper GI surgery. He obtained his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in 2014 and completed his specialist surgical training (CCT) in 2016.
Before his appointment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Mr. Tan completed an advanced oesophagogastric fellowship at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. He is fully trained in both laparoscopic and open surgeries, with a specialist interest in complex oesophagogastric conditions, including gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, hiatal hernias, and oesophageal and gastric cancers.
Mr. Tan provides online teaching for the Masters of Surgical Sciences programme at the University of Edinburgh and tutors third-year medical students from the University of Birmingham. He retains an active interest in research on nutrition and body composition and its effects on outcomes following oesophago-gastric cancer surgery.
