Therapy using Lokomat® robotic equipment

Spinal injuries and acquired or traumatic brain injuries, incurred as the result of accidents or falls, and lifelong conditions such as cerebral palsy can limit the body’s movement. If you need assistance learning, or relearning to walk, the Lokomat® system may help you.

Need to know

Your consultant and the physiotherapy team will explain the Lokomat system and how it will work for you, they will be able to answer any questions you might have.

The Lokomat device is a robotic treadmill system, shaped to physically support you whilst you exercise. Its exoskeleton legs support your body weight so that your own legs are able to move freely in a walking motion.

Your physiotherapist can control how fast you walk, how much body weight you use and how much assistance the robotic legs give you through range of motion.

Your specialist consultant will introduce you to the Lokomat system and explain how the robotic assisted treadmill works to improve your walking function. They may show you a video of the system in action so that you know exactly what to expect when your treatment starts.

You do not have to do anything to prepare for your Lokomat treatment and can eat and drink normally beforehand.

After your Lokomat session, you may feel tired. This is to be expected, and its important to rest and sleep if you need to.

It is also important to ensure that you are hydrated after the session.

Your consultant and the physiotherapy team will work with you closely and may recommend a series of further, more intensive sessions depending on the nature of your condition and how well you are responding to the therapy.
