CARDIAC TREATMENTS

Comprehensive, caring treatment
With decades of expertise, a wealth of experience and the very latest technologies and techniques, we’re able to offer a wide range of cardiac treatments at our five specialist cardiac hospitals in London and Birmingham. You’ll get the rapid, accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment you need at every stage.  These are some of the most common cardiac treatments we perform:

Aortic root surgery

Surgery for an aortic aneurysm. If you experience heart related problems that require aortic root surgery, our cardiac experts can help to treat you

Aortic valve surgery

A surgical procedure to correct aortic valve problems by either repairing a damaged valve or replacing it to restore heart function.

Balloon valvuloplasty

VALVULOPLASTY OF THE MITRAL, AORTIC OR PULMONARY VALVE

If you have a narrowed heart valve, you may benefit from a balloon valvuloplasty

Cardiac resynchronisation therapy

Cardiac resynchronisation therapy is a proven way to manage heart failure. Delivered by our leading cardiac specialists, this treatment helps your heart beat more efficiently and relieves day-to-day symptoms.

Cardiac catheter ablation

A cardiac ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats). You may be referred for this treatment if abnormal heart rhythms are interfering with your quality of life.

Central venous catheter placement

Central line placement or central venous catheter. A tube used to administer treatments such as antibiotics, chemotherapy, food supplements and blood transfusions.

Conduction system pacing

Conduction system pacing is an effective alternative to right ventricular pacing for treating a slow heart rate, and it can also be used in cardiac resynchronisation therapy.

Coronary angioplasty

A non-surgical treatment to widen arteries in the heart that have become narrow or blocked by plaque. You may see a coronary angioplasty referred to as “Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA)”.

Electrical cardioversion

At HCA UK, we offer cardioversion as a treatment for arrhythmia. This quick and effective treatment uses a carefully controlled electrical shock or medication to correct an irregular heart rhythm.

Endoscopic cardiac surgery

Less invasive, minimal access surgical technique for mitral and aortic valves, it can be an alternative for open heart surgery (sternotomy). The technique provides more options for patients and can help them achieve a better quality of life more quickly, along with less pain and scarring.

Endovascular aneurysm or aortic repair

A pioneering treatment that uses minimally invasive surgical techniques to help stop an aneurysm from bursting.

Heart bypass surgery (CABG)

Heart bypass surgery is a treatment for coronary heart disease. The coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedure helps to restore blood flow to the heart where arteries have become blocked, a condition which can result in pain in the chest or more serious cardiovascular complications.

Heart valve surgery

A surgical procedure to correct heart valve problems by either repairing a damaged valve or replacing it with a new valve.

Hole in the heart surgery

Minimally invasive surgery to close a hole in the heart, this can include patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure, atrial septal defect (ASD) and ventricular septal defect (VSD) repair.

IVC filter insertion

IVC filter insertion. If you have problems with blood clotting you may need an IVC filter. Our radiology experts can help to treat you.

Leadless pacemakers

A leadless pacemaker is a small, battery-powered device implanted directly into the heart's right ventricle, eliminating the need for external leads or a chest incision.

Left atrial appendage closure

A non-surgical cardiac procedure that can reduce the risk of stroke if you have atrial fibrillation. Also known as a left atrial appendage closure.

Minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB)

MIDCAB is a surgical procedure conducted on patients who need a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), sometimes offered as an alternative to open heart surgery.

MitraClip®

A minimally invasive treatment for mitral valve leak. The repair of a mitral valve to reduce regurgitation using a highly manoeuvrable trans-catheter technique.

Mitral valve surgery

SURGERY FOR LEAKING OR NARROWED (STENOSED) MITRAL VALVE

Pericardial aspiration

Pericardial aspiration is a procedure where fluid is drained from around the heart to restore normal heart function.

Personalised external aortic root support (PEARS)

A surgical procedure to repair an aorta root affected by Marfan Syndrome

Radiofrequency (RF) ablation

Radiofrequency ablation, or RF ablation, is a nonsurgical procedure used to treat conditions affecting the body's neurological and cardiac systems – from chronic pain to irregular heart rhythm.

Renal denervation

Percutaneous catheter-based renal denervation is a minimally invasive procedure that can be used to treat patients that have high blood pressure that’s resistant to conventional tablet therapies, also known as resistant hypertension.

Septal myectomy

Surgery for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). surgical procedure to remove part of the thickened heart muscle wall caused by HCM.

Stent surgery

A stent is a small, expandable metal mesh tube that can be inserted into narrowed arteries to restore blood flow. This is usually done to treat coronary artery disease (CAD) caused by the build-up of fatty plaque.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR CARDIAC TREATMENT JOURNEY

What to expect
You may be experiencing heart symptoms for the first time or be managing an ongoing condition that requires regular treatment. Whatever your needs, we’ll make sure you know exactly what’s happening and are supported throughout the process.

Cardiac treatments can cover everything from lifestyle changes through to major surgery. Your specific treatment will be precisely tailored to your condition, but this will give you a good idea of what to expect. Our teams will always be here to explain everything in person too, so if you have any questions, we’ll be happy to help.

01

Initial consultation

You might be referred by your GP or one of our GPs here at HCA UK, or you can self-refer by calling our cardiac referral line on 020 7616 4988. However you come to us, we’ll get you booked in quickly to see one of our consultant cardiologists.

You can talk to your consultant about your symptoms, and they’ll carry out a thorough physical assessment. They’ll ask you about your medical and family history, your overall health and any diagnosis you may already have received, before recommending any scans or tests.

02

Tests and scans

Your specialist may arrange for you to have several tests and scans to help accurately diagnose your condition. Some of these may happen on the day of your first consultation and can include:

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) to check your heart’s rhythm and electrical activity
  • Echocardiogram (ECHO) to look at the structure of your heart and valves and assess how well it functions and pumps
  • A 24-hour tape and exercise test, which will be reviewed with the most appropriate specialist

03

Results and diagnosis

We know that waiting is worrying, so you’ll get your test results back within 48 hours. Then you’ll have a follow-up consultation with your cardiologist, who’ll talk you through the findings in detail, and give you a precise diagnosis.

04

Treatment

There’s a wide range of cardiac conditions, and ways to treat them. Your consultant will discuss your specific condition, and the potential treatment options, in detail. Those might range from relatively simple steps such as lifestyle changes or ongoing monitoring, through to medication or surgery.

You’ll be given ample time to ask questions, help to weigh up any risks and benefits, and your consultant will support you to make an informed decision about the best way to treat your condition.  If you need any further tests or specialist help, we can seamlessly arrange that within the extensive HCA network.

05

Follow up and ongoing support

Our expert, caring teams will be available to help you with every aspect of your ongoing care and treatment, from monitoring or medication to managing your recovery from surgery. We’re here for you.
