Consultant Nicholas Kalavrezos, Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgeon

"A decision of life commitment": Nicholas Kalavrezos, Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgeon, shares his journey into the surgical side of medicine and his insight on what it takes to be a leading surgeon in The Harley Street Clinic’s Head and Neck Centre.

Treatments we offer

Our collaborative approach means each patients care is coordinated so that they receive the best possible care. Consultations, diagnostic tests and some treatments take place under one roof in the centre of London’s Harley Street at 16 Devonshire Street. Operations, radiotherapy and major imaging are performed in our main hospital, The Harley Street Clinic, located around the corner at 35 Weymouth Street.

Consultants discuss with each patient the full range of treatment options, depending on the type and complexity of cancer they have, so that patients are involved at every stage and a personalised treatment plan is developed to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Treatment options include:

  • Diagnosis, tests and investigations: primary assessment and diagnosis; specialist review and second opinion; staging and investigation
  • Surgery, including ENT surgery, maxillofacial surgery and minimally invasive techniques
  • Cancer genetics

Surgical planning

Pre-surgery, we can perform a 3D CT scan. By analysing the scan in advance, we can plan and design patient specific guides and implants to increase surgical accuracy, which means ultimately improving our patient outcomes.

Reconstructive surgery

Our team can perform a wide range of flaps from local flaps for skin cancer surgery and local anaesthesia to advanced microsurgical reconstructive surgery for major defects of the face, mouth, neck and jaws.

Cancer surgery

We perform the full range of procedures and are skilled in minimally-invasive surgery as well as traditional open surgery. Our team of surgeons have some of the highest levels of experience and training in the UK, which means our Head and Neck surgeons perform and pioneer the latest surgical procedures. Minimally invasive techniques are often used to remove hard-to-reach tumours, and large tumours can now be safely resected with good margins, and defects restored with microvascular, scarless reconstruction.

Radiotherapy

Radiotherapy, which uses x-rays to destroy cancer cells, can be the main treatment for head and neck cancer or can be used after surgery.

At The Harley Street Clinic we are able to offer our head and neck patients access to the very latest True Beam Radiotherapy, which provides higher precision and more advanced imaging than previous generations of linear accelerator. The Varian TrueBeam ensures we are able to offer the most up-to-date radiotherapy techniques including image guided radiotherapy (IGRT), intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) and deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH).

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy for head and neck cancers is undertaken at our Leaders in Oncology centre located at 95-97 Harley Street, but can be accommodated closer to where is more convenient for each patient. Chemotherapy can be given before surgery to shrink the tumour or in conjunction with radiotherapy.

Cancer Support

We understand that a cancer diagnosis has a huge emotional impact as well as a physical one. Patients undergoing cancer treatment with us can access a wide range of supportive services at Leaders in Oncology care, including complimentary therapies, psychological support and nutrition advice.
