Orthopaedic services at London Bridge Hospital are anything but routine. From our research to our reporting, our radiology to our physiotherapy and even how we prepare our patients for surgery – our work goes beyond ordinary.

Here, patients receive diagnostics and subspecialised treatment in the hands of leading consultants performing large volumes of orthopaedic procedures; their preparation for the most routine to more complex surgery is carefully managed; and their care is delivered by specialists working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary framework.

We were the first hospital in the UK to perform minimally invasive spinal surgery using the ExcelsiusGPS® Robotic Navigation System and are one of only seven centres in the UK to be granted an AOSpine Centre of Excellence

Rapid access to diagnostics

Our consultants use the latest imaging and scanning techniques to give patients rapid and accurate diagnosis – with results usually reported on the same day. Using high resolution imaging technology, including 3T MRI and CT scanners, the accuracy of the results mean most patients will avoid the need for more invasive diagnostic modalities.

Radiology reports are meticulously interpreted by our specialist musculoskeletal and neuroradiologists. This insight allows our consultants to build personalised pain management plans with the utmost precision – particularly valuable within sports medicine - evidenced by our work with leading national and international sports teams.

Patients can usually have all diagnostic tests and imaging in the same location, on the same day. We have diagnostic centres within the main hospital, HCA UK at The Shard and London Bridge Hospital’s outpatient centres across the city.

Andy patient story London Bridge Hospital

Andy’s story: Keeping his music alive after his thumb surgery

Andy is a founder and CEO of a global automotive consultancy, which requires running a number of large events, traveling for roadshows, conferences and networking. Outside work, he has a deep passion for music and plays guitar and drums almost every single day.

Innovating orthopaedic treatment

They deliver greater reductions in pain, scarring and muscle trauma and further enhance mobility and joint flexibility through procedures including:

  • Bespoke hip and knee replacements
  • Meniscal repair and meniscal transplantation
  • Minimally invasive spinal surgery using the ExcelsiusGPS® Robotic Navigation System
  • Lumbar and cervical disc replacements
  • ACL reconstruction, including the use of allografts and biological augmentation

Introducing our highly specialised diabetic foot clinic

It wasn’t long ago that patients with a diabetic foot could only be treated by helping them to bear weight without further damage, or by amputating the limb altogether. But now, thanks to pioneering surgical techniques, Professor Venu Kavarthapu and his team are able to restore a patient’s ability to walk and prevent the need for amputation.

A group of diabetologists, podiatrists, orthotists, interventional radiologists and vascular surgeons work with Professor Kavarthapu to provide end-to-end support for each of our patients – and ensure a steady and lasting recovery from diabetic foot reconstruction.

A meeting of the foremost orthopaedic minds

The multidisciplinary team (MDT) regularly meet to review, discuss and agree the right course of action for complex cases. A combination of all clinicians including lead orthopaedic surgeons, radiologists, rheumatologists, pain medicine and sports and exercise medicine consultants alongside clinical and surgical nurse specialists and therapists come together to consider the intricacies of each individual case including medical history, imaging, latest results, response to treatment and lifestyle factors.

This collaboration not only delivers thorough governance and safe practice but allows a patient’s team to benefit from the sharing of knowledge, experience and the latest advancements in orthopaedic medicine.

Physio and Occupational Therapy

Our physiotherapists are sub-specialised in post-operative orthopaedic care and work collaboratively with the patient’s consultant and clinical team to deliver a truly tailored, outcome driven programme.

Using the latest performance equipment in our inpatient gym based at the main hospital or outpatient gym at HCA UK at The Shard, programmes are designed to activate movement, restore function and increase flexibility.

Our team of occupational therapists provide specialist evaluation and intervention for patients experiencing pain or difficulty in performing everyday tasks. Using techniques such as peripheral neuropathy programmes, cognitive rehab and fatigue management they work with the patient to help manage and alleviate symptoms.
