Menika leads a team managing over 30 clinical applications, helping make sure technology supports our standout patient care. She shares her journey from nursing to tech, the strength of her team, and why being part of something bigger keeps her excited for what’s next.
I have been at HCA UK for three years now. It’s been an exciting transition from a lengthy career in the NHS.
Before joining HCA UK, I spent 20 years in the NHS, primarily focused on digital healthcare and IT. I began my career as a nurse but quickly transitioned into technology, driven by a passion for improving patient care through innovation. Seeking new challenges and opportunities for growth, I explored roles beyond the NHS and was drawn to HCA UK, where colleagues spoke highly of the organisation. Joining HCA UK allowed me to leverage my experience, develop my leadership skills, and contribute to advancing clinical systems. It has been an incredibly rewarding journey, and I remain excited about the work we’re doing to enhance patient care.
I’m the Interim Clinical Systems Manager, leading a team of 10 professionals responsible for over 30 clinical applications. My role involves overseeing system performance, managing upgrades, and ensuring compliance with licensing and contractual agreements. I focus on implementing the right systems and services to support clinicians and deliver the best possible care for patients. I find this work rewarding because it allows me to empower my team, provide the resources they need, and create an environment where they can excel.
What I enjoy most is the diversity of the work itself. No two days are the same, and I thrive on the challenge. Every day brings new issues, and I find that exciting. I also love the opportunity to make a difference, which I do even though I’m not directly working with patients. I find it fulfilling that the work we do not only enables the clinical work but elevates it.
One of the best parts of my job is working alongside amazing colleagues. We have a very diverse team, with members from different backgrounds and experiences, which makes the work environment enriching. I’ve built strong relationships through networking, and I find that those connections really help in getting things done. I think there is a misconception that the private sector might be tough to navigate, but in my experience, everyone here is incredibly approachable and supportive. It feels like a community, and we all have each other’s backs.
Absolutely. One of the things I truly value about HCA UK is its commitment to colleague well-being. The benefits are thoughtfully designed to support health, work-life balance, and professional growth. I’ve particularly appreciated the dental care and technology perks, as well as flexible payment options for equipment. These initiatives make a real difference, and I actively take advantage of them. Many colleagues may not realise the breadth of benefits available, but they genuinely enhance both personal and professional life.
“I’ve always worked in digital and IT despite training as a nurse initially. At HCA UK, I’m seeing more and more women in these roles and in better positions. We are leading that change and more people are being recognised for the skillsets. It’s such a vital part of the healthcare service and HCA UK is bringing in more people to properly grow this industry.”
There was a time when I was supporting at a hospital and overheard a patient sharing her joy about a successful her IVF treatment. Knowing that our systems played a vital role in making that possible was incredibly rewarding. Although I don’t interact directly with patients, moments like this remind me that the work we do behind the scenes ensures everything runs smoothly, enabling clinicians to deliver exceptional care. It’s experiences like these that reinforce my commitment to this work.
What keeps me here is the sense of purpose and the opportunities for growth. The culture is supportive, and I’ve always felt appreciated for the work I do, especially as a woman in technology. I also value how HCA UK demonstrates a strong commitment to professional development, offering resources and opportunities to upskill and advance. I know that I’m at the beginning of my HCA UK career journey, and I’m excited about the future.
Looking ahead, we’re evolving the technology, security, software and systems that underpin patient care – a transformation I’m truly excited about. It’s a huge opportunity for both mine and the team’s development, while delivering meaningful improvements to patient experience. I’m committed to learning and contributing as much as possible to ensure its success. With several projects in line, I’m proud to play a role in shaping the future of healthcare technology at HCA UK.
