Mariyana's HCA UK story

How did you get started at HCA UK?

I spent my first three years at London Bridge Hospital, learning as much as I could about housekeeping in a healthcare environment. During that time, I gained valuable experience and started thinking about what the next step in my career might look like.

When progression opportunities weren't available straight away, I decided to try something different and took a housekeeping supervisor role in the hotel industry. I hoped it would give me the development I was looking for, but it didn't take long for me to realise how much I missed working at HCA UK.

The environment was completely different. I missed the variety, the responsibility and the sense of purpose that came with supporting patient care. That's when I realised how much I valued being part of a hospital team.

So, when a Housekeeping Supervisor opportunity came up at London Bridge Hospital, I didn't hesitate to apply and return.

What has your career journey looked like?

After coming back to HCA UK, my career progressed quickly. I moved from Housekeeping Supervisor to Senior Supervisor, and before long I was being encouraged to apply for a Housekeeping Manager role.

To be honest, I wasn't sure I was ready.

Becoming a manager had always been one of my goals, but I thought it might happen further down the line. What made the difference was the support and encouragement I received from the people around me. My colleagues and leaders believed in me, even when I wasn't completely confident in myself.

Looking back, I'm really glad I took that leap. The role is challenging, but that's one of the things I enjoy most about it. Every day is different, and there's always something new to learn or a problem to solve.

What do you like most about your role?

One of the most rewarding parts of my role is supporting the development of my team.

I know how important it is for people to have opportunities to learn and gain new experiences because I've benefited from that support myself. That's why I try to involve my supervisors in decision-making, give them ownership of tasks and help them build their confidence.

I want people to feel valued and included, and to know that their contribution matters. When you give people opportunities and responsibilities, it helps them grow and prepares them for the next stage of their careers.

Why is housekeeping so important?

Housekeeping isn't always the most visible role in a hospital, but it's a vital one.

A clean, safe and welcoming environment has a direct impact on patients, visitors and colleagues. Without housekeeping teams, hospitals simply couldn't operate effectively.

For me, it's about supporting my team to do the right thing every day, working together and making sure we're providing the highest standards possible. I'm proud of the role we play in delivering outstanding care, even if much of our work happens behind the scenes.

What’s next?

I'm still settling into my management role, and there's plenty more I want to achieve. Right now, my focus is on building a strong, united team, helping people develop their skills and continuing to raise standards across the department.

If there's one thing I've learnt during my career journey, it's that opportunities are there if you're willing to work hard and keep learning.

My advice to anyone considering a career in housekeeping at HCA UK is simple: be open to new experiences, believe in yourself and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. There are people who will support you, encourage you and help you take that next step.

When I started as a Housekeeping Assistant in 2019, I couldn't have imagined that I'd become a Housekeeping Manager just a few years later. Looking back, I'm incredibly proud of how far I've come, and excited to see what comes next.
