The opportunity to take my career to the next level was something I'd never had before

Tell us about your decision to come to the UK from Lebanon?

During my time in Lebanon, I experienced the challenges that come with being classified as a refugee, which significantly restricted my employment opportunities. Despite my qualifications and experience as a registered nurse, the options for development and progression at work were quite limited due to the constraints placed upon refugees.

This situation was undoubtedly frustrating, as I was eager to utilise my skills and make a meaningful contribution to the healthcare field. One of the most disheartening aspects of this period was the realization that, despite my dedication and hard work, career progression remained elusive due to my Palestinian nationality. I dedicated eight years of my life to my role as a Registered Nurse, during which time I received numerous recognitions for my commitment and expertise. While these awards were a source of personal pride, it was disheartening to witness that they did not translate into the promotions and advancement opportunities that I deserved.

How did you feel when you started at HCA UK?

The opportunity that unfolded from the moment I entered the interview stage to the moment I arrived at Heathrow airport marked a truly life-changing experience. The support and hospitality I received from the dedicated teams at HCA and Talent Beyond Boundaries made me feel not just welcomed but genuinely valued from the very beginning.

Upon commencing my work with HCA, I found myself in an environment where diversity was not only embraced but celebrated. My colleagues hailed from different regions and cultures, and their willingness to support and assist me in every possible way was a testament to the inclusive and collaborative nature of the workplace. Their companionship and willingness to share knowledge and experiences not only facilitated my integration into the team but also enriched my own understanding of different cultures.

What inspired you to be in healthcare?

I find a deep sense of purpose in my work as a healthcare professional. It enables me to contribute to saving lives, promoting wellness, and improving the quality of life for patients. I have a strong desire to alleviate the suffering of others and make a positive impact on people’s lives.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

My current position as a Clinical Nurse Specialist is undeniably fulfilling, particularly when I reflect on the profound impact I have on the lives of the individuals under my care. Knowing that I play a pivotal role in enhancing their well-being and, in many cases, helping them on their path to recovery is a source of immense satisfaction and motivation. I really enjoy it when I meet with the patients before their operation as it gives me the chance to meet them and address any questions/concerns they have and reassuring them that they are in capable hands.

In this position, the feeling of making a tangible difference in the human experience is a constant source of inspiration, reminding me that healthcare is not just a profession but a calling, and I am grateful to be a part of it.

What is your favourite thing to do in London?

I find immense joy in exploring the beautiful parks of London, where I can unwind in nature’s embrace and revel in the serene atmosphere they offer. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll or a peaceful picnic, London’s parks provide the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

What is your biggest achievement and proudest moment?

Within a mere six months of my arrival in the United Kingdom, I achieved the incredible milestone of being promoted in my career. This significant step forward was not only a testament to my dedication and hard work but also a reflection of the opportunities and support I found in my new environment. With this promotion, I was able to take my professional journey to the next level, which included embarking on the pursuit of a Master’s degree in Advanced Clinical Practice. The combination of my rapid career progression and my commitment to advancing my education through the Master’s program has been a pivotal and transformative period in my life. It has reinforced my belief in the power of hard work, dedication and seizing the opportunities that life presents, and it has set the stage for an even more promising future in my professional and academic pursuits.

I was also incredibly honoured to have the opportunity to meet King Charles at Buckingham Palace on his 75th Birthday as part of an event recognising healthcare professionals in the UK. The experience was one-of-a-kind and gratitude fills my heart to see my skills as a nurse recognised in this way.

This remarkable opportunity has not only granted me the chance to contribute to a company of such high regard, but it has also provided me with invaluable experiences, professional growth and a supportive community that continually inspires and motivates me. Working at HCA has been a truly transformative journey, one where I’ve had the privilege to collaborate with exceptional colleagues, serve a meaningful purpose and be part of an organization that upholds the highest standards of excellence. I am deeply aware of the exceptional nature of this opportunity, and I remain profoundly grateful for the chance to be a part of the HCA family.
