What happens during a carpel tunnel release? icon plus
Carpal tunnel release is usually done under local anaesthetic. This numbs your wrist and hand and will block pain in the area. Your surgeon will make a small cut on your wrist or palm. They'll then cut the ligament in your carpal tunnel. This will reduce pressure on your nerve and make space in your carpal tunnel. Your surgeon will then stitch up the cut in your hand. -
How to prepare for surgery icon plus
Your consultant will explain the procedure and how to prepare. They'll also answer any questions you may have. You won't need to stay overnight and can go home after your surgery.
You should arrange to have someone take you home as you won't be able to drive. Like all procedures, there may be some risks and side effects involved. Your consultant will explain these to you. -
Post-surgery recovery from carpal tunnel surgery icon plus
You may initially have some pain, swelling and stiffness, but you can use your hand and do light activities from the day of your surgery. It can take around three months to fully recover.
You might need to have some hand therapy to help strengthen your wrist. You may be able to return to work around two weeks after your surgery. This depends on the type of job you have. Your consultant will let you know when you can get back to your usual routine.
