Paediatric interventional radiology

Minimally invasive treatments for children

A range of procedures that are guided by images.

About interventional radiology for children

Paediatric interventional radiology uses imaging techniques such as X-ray fluoroscopys, ultrasound, CT and MRI scans to carry out highly targeted treatments or diagnose a variety of conditions in children.

Most treatments are minimally invasive alternatives to open or keyhole surgery. They're therefore more comfortable for your child and it shouldn't take them as long to recover.

Paediatric interventional radiology is most commonly used to treat birthmarks and vascular conditions. The techniques we use most often are sclerotherapy (injecting a solution into the blood vessel), embolisation (blocking the blood vessel) and endovenous laser ablation or EVLA (a type of laser treatment).

To give your child the best treatment, we work closely with consultants from other specialties.

Paediatric imaging

The imaging departments are equipped with the latest technology designed specifically for our paediatric patients. The radiographers are experienced in scanning children and will help answer any questions you or or child may have.

Interventional radiology for children can be performed as an outpatient, day case or inpatient. After the scan the results will be reported to your consultant who will discuss the results and any next steps as required.
