Mr Neil Dorward is an established Consultant Neurosurgeon at London"s Wellington and Royal Free hospitals having been appointed as a consultant in 1999. He is a protagonist of endoscopic and minimal access techniques in neurosurgery and spinal surgery. His clinical practice covers neuro-oncology (brain tumours), pituitary conditions and complex spinal surgery. Within these fields he applies endoscopic and minimal access techniques widely.

Mr Dorward qualified from St Mary"s Hospital Medical School in London with the degrees BSc & MB BS and progressed through premier London training posts whilst obtaining the FRCS qualification in surgery. He has specialised in Neurosurgery since 1993, including 2 years in research obtaining a higher degree (MS) and obtained the specialist fellowship in neurosurgery (FRCS(SN) in 1999. His research studies were at the forefront of technology that provides intra-operative image-guidance in open and endoscopic neurosurgery. Since his appointment as a Consultant Neurosurgeon in 1999 he has pioneered endoscopic and minimum access surgery at the Royal Free, introduced complex spinal surgical techniques and spinal disc replacement surgery. He is a faculty member on several neurosurgery training courses at the Royal College of Surgeons and served as secretary of the Clinical Neurosciences section at the Royal Society of Medicine for 3 years.

In addition to his clinical interests Mr Dorward also directs a clinical research programme with two full time medical research fellows (neurosurgery trainees) working towards the PhD degree. These projects comprise one investigating the use of ultrasound technology to delineate the margin of brain tumours during surgery and the second aims to immortalise cultured pituitary tumour cells for further genetic and therapeutic study in vitro. The research is funded by a combination of academic grants, on-call work by the research fellows and through Mr Dorward"s Research and Development Fund. Each April Mr Dorward runs the London Marathon to raise funds for the research projects.
