    Mr O’Dowd is a consultant spinal surgeon in full-time clinical practice in London and Hampshire. He has previously been a consultant spinal surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals London. He currently works in the independent sector in London and at the NHS hospitals in Basingstoke and Winchester. In the National Health Service he performed complex reconstructive procedures in adults and scoliosis surgery in children.

    His clinical practice now is focused on painful conditions of the spine and his main clinical interests are low back pain, lumbar spondylosis, low back pain in athletes, neck pain, cervical spondylosis, whiplash injury, cervical and thoracolumbar trauma and coccygeal injuries.

    Mr O’Dowd has a strong interest in non-surgical management of chronic back pain and set up the RealHealth Institute in the UK and the Netherlands focusing on providing multidisciplinary assessment and treatment programmes for patients with chronic and complex spinal pain. His research interests have led to publications and scientific presentations in relation to spinal injury, scoliosis, low back, non-operative spine care, spinal outcome measures, thoracoscopic and laparoscopic spinal surgery and undergraduate education. He is ex-president of the Society for Back Pain Research and was one of the founders and global director of education for AO Spine which has become the largest professional support and representative organisation for spinal surgeons across the world.

    He has extensive experience working as a medical expert in spinal injuries, whiplash injury, workplace back injury and in all aspects of litigation in relation to the spine.
