Resident Doctor – Critical Care (ITU/HDU, Nights Only)

Location: Birmingham, The Harborne Hospital,  (Private Patients)
Contract Type: Part-time, Permanent
Shifts: 1 x 12-hour shift per week (Weekdays, 20:00 – 08:00)
Salary: £76,000 – £79,000 (dependent on experience and training)

We are seeking experienced Resident Doctors with a specialist interest in Adult Critical Care, ITU/HDU to join our team on a part-time, nights-only basis. This role is ideally suited to clinicians looking to commit long-term to a consistent single weekly night shift within a high-quality private healthcare setting.

The Critical Care Unit at The Harborne Hospital provides both ITU and HDU care within modern, single-occupancy rooms. We are proud to have been rated “Good” by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), reflecting our strong commitment to patient safety, clinical excellence, and high standards of care.

 

What You’ll Do:

You will join a small team, typically managing low patient occupancy, ensuring each individual receives exceptional, responsive, and safe care.

In this role, you will:

  • Monitor, assess, stabilise, and manage patients, including ventilatory support.
  • Oversee patient predominantly HDU, following complex surgery across a range of specialties, including gynaecology, cardiac, neurology, oncology, and renal/liver patients, many requiring short-term stay. (On occasion Level 3 ITU Patients will be present)
  • Perform a range of advanced procedures including central venous access, endotracheal intubation, and the independent management of complex airways
  • Maintain accurate, detailed patient records, including clerking admissions and facilitating safe and efficient discharges
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, ensuring clear, concise, and effective handovers of care
  • Act as the airway specialist for the hospital-wide Resuscitation) team, providing expert support during emergency situations

 

During night shifts, you will be supported by a specialist Registered Nurse, with access to an on-call Consultant for guidance and escalation. A dedicated rest facility is available allowing for appropriate downtime when clinically safe.

What You’ll Bring

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise in the UK
  • ST4+ level training in Intensive Care Medicine, Anaesthesia, or a related Critical Care specialty
  • Post Grad qualification ( Royal College Exam )
  • Demonstrable experience working within a Level 3 Adult Critical Care Unit
  • Ability and commitment to a nights-only working pattern on a long-term basis
