An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Blood Sciences Deputy Service lead at our Main Lab at Shropshire House to work with and supervise the Night Shift teams. The Main responsibilities will be to provide managerial and leadership for the Blood Sciences departments (Biochemistry, Central Specimen Reception, Haematology and Blood Transfusion)) ensuring a high-quality pathology service is provided during the night shift. The Deputy Service Lead will regularly work within all these sections so will be multi-disciplinary trained.

The role will also act as Silver Command for all disciplines working overnight and will report into Gold Command for any incidents occurring during their shifts.

HCA Laboratories has over 35 years’ experience in providing pathology services, for acute care in our HCA Hospitals, IVF Clinics, Insurance work, healthcare screening and GP services. We cover all disciplines in pathology including allergy, biochemistry and endocrinology, haematology and blood transfusion, histopathology and cytology, immunology, and microbiology and serology, with each laboratory equipped with the best available analytical instrumentation.

The shift times are:

2030 – 0815 – (night shift pattern - 4 nights on, 3 nights off, 3 nights on, 4 nights off)

Duties & responsibilities:

  • Ensure the smooth running of all Blood Science departments during the night shift and oversee all departments in the Blood Sciences area.
  • Participate in the multi-disciplinary Night Shift Rota and maintain competence in all four of the blood sciences departments.
  • Draw up staff rotas and ensure all areas and shifts are adequately covered and align with nightly workload
  • Ensure Speedy and accurate processing of samples, and monitoring and resolving of outstanding lists
  • Ensure a clean and documented hand over to day shift
  • Establish and develop policies and procedures to ensure an efficient delivery of laboratory service.
  • Responsible for the Night Shift training, and development
  • In conjunction with Technical Services Managers and Service Lead ensure SOPs and all documents are reviewed in a timely manner
  • Ensure all equipment in the department is working correctly and that maintenance is performed and recorded
  • Escalate issues with analysers, reagents, etc to the line manager
  • Follow SOP’s and in accordance with manufacturer’s operating instructions
  • Assist Service Lead in writing and reviewing SOPs and Risk Assessments and performing audits
  • Ensure correct process in regard to Stock control (ordering and rotation and acceptance testing) is in place and followed by all staff
  • Identify own training and development needs and undertake training/education as required
  • Achieve competence in the areas outlined in the training manual. Attend HCA mandatory training
  • Perform training of staff (from other departments as required) and complete training records
  • Encourage and support staff development
  • Maintain professional development records in compliance with IBMS and HCPC requirements.
  • Liaise with 3rd Party Liaison Officer to ensure urgent work is completed on time
  • Ensure Validation / authorising queue is monitored regularly and there are no build ups
  • Assess and review suitability of “urgent samples” process
  • Ensure processes and flow between specimen reception and Chemistry/Haematology/Blood Transfusion is efficiently and proactively managed moving staff within departments if needed
  • Maintain good working relationship with Consultant Biochemists/Haematologists and ensure results needing clinical escalation happens in real time
  • Help Maintain UKAS accreditation

What you will bring:

  • HCPC Registered
  • MSc desirable
  • BBTS qualification or substantial BT experience
  • Member of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences
  • Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences is desirable
  • Evidence of continual personal development
  • Up to date knowledge of Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Blood Transfusion (preferably Specialist Portfolio)
  • Used to multitasking and good at managing high volumes of samples
  • Experience of managing Teams
