Our screening protocols

Upon entry to any of our hospitals or clinics, you will be asked a set of screening questions and have your temperature taken.

Please be advised that if you, or someone in your household, have any of the below - you will not be able to enter our hospitals or clinics:

  • a temperature
  • a new continuous cough
  • a loss of, or change in taste or smell
  • been in contact with a confirmed COVID-19 positive person in the last 14 days
  • been told you have confirmed COVID-19 in the last 14 days
  • Individuals arriving to attend pre-arranged treatment in the UK will need to complete the Public Health passenger locator form and provide a letter (or S2 certificate) from their healthcare provider explaining treatment. They are be able to travel to and from your healthcare provider and the place you’re staying in the UK but otherwise are required to self-isolate for 14 days.

If you are planning to visit one of our hospitals, for any reason, and develop COVID-19 symptoms after booking, you will need to rearrange your visit with your consultant’s medical secretary.

Testing for COVID-19

Admissions for treatment

For your surgery or procedure to go ahead as planned, we must receive a negative result from you no more than 4 days prior to your admission. Please be advised that if your test returns positive, you will most likely need to continue isolation until you are no longer carrying the virus before we are able to safely carry out your surgery or procedure.

Antigen & antibody testing

We currently undertake two different types of testing for COVID-19.

Antigen testing: to help prevent transmission, and protect everyone, we test all patients who are to be admitted for a procedure - using antigen diagnostic swab tests. To help prevent transmission, and protect everyone, we test all patients who are to be admitted for surgery or having certain procedures. The antigen test identifies the presence of COVID-19 in the body. We do not charge patients for antigen testing.

Antibody testing: the Abbott Laboratories antibody test (approved by Public Health England) helps to determine if you have previously been infected with the virus. This test is currently only available with a referral from your consultant.

Staff testing

We have implemented a comprehensive asymptomatic screening programme for everyone working within our hospitals and clinics, including our non-clinical, temporary and bank staff.

Staff in haematology/oncology and our paediatric intensive care units, and those caring for immuno-suppressed patients, are tested with even greater frequency than our standard guidelines.

If staff, or any members of their household, display symptoms defined in the screening protocols section (above), they will be asked to self-isolate for a period of up to 14 days.
