Mirena coil insertion
hormonal intrauterine device (IUD)
A method of long term birth control that requires a non-invasive procedure
What is a mirena coil?
It can also be inserted to treat women with heavy periods who choose to use contraception. You and your consultant may determine that it is the right method of birth control for you.

What happens during the insertion? icon plus
Your consultant will apply an antiseptic solution to your vagina and cervix. They will then pass an inserter (a thin tube of flexible plastic) containing the coil into your vagina and then into your uterus.
Once they have checked it is positioned correctly they will remove the plastic inserter, leaving the coil in your uterus. Your consultant will ensure that the two threads attached to the stem of the coil properly extend to your cervix, which helps ensure it is properly placed. It also helps with the removal when the time comes.
They will trim the threads to the appropriate length. The procedure is non-invasive and takes around five minutes. -

Your consultant will let you know how best to prepare for this procedure. -

Your consultant will explain how to perform a self-check of the threads of your coil. You will need to do this once a month. You will need to have a follow-up appointment with your consultant within four to six weeks from insertion.
Your consultant will check that your coil remains properly in place. You will need to have annual check-ups for as long as you have the coil inserted.
