Injections for anal fissures

Anal fissure repair

By injecting a muscle relaxant into the muscle around your anus, we can help to relieve the pain of anal fissures

About injections for anal fissures

An anal fissure is a small tear in the skin near your back passage. It can be painful and sometimes lead to bleeding after you poo. Anal fissures usually go away with the help of special creams. If they don't, we can inject a relaxant into the muscle around your anus to start the healing process.

Need to know

  • What happens icon plus

Injections for anal fissures are normally carried out under local anaesthetic, which means we'll numb the area of injection. Your consultant will inject a relaxant into the muscle around your anus. This may feel a little uncomfortable but the procedure is very quick. The relaxant will begin to work over the next three days, helping to relax the muscle and reduce the amount of pain you feel. It will also increase blood flow to the fissure, so it can heal naturally. These injections are normally carried out if other anal fissure treatments haven't worked.
  • How to prepare icon plus

There isn't any special preparation involved, so you won't need to limit your food or drink intake beforehand. Your consultant will explain the procedure and answer any questions may have. They will also explain any potential risks or side effects.
  • Afterwards icon plus

The procedure will only take a few minutes and you'll most likely be able to go home straight after. The injections will begin to work over the next 72 hours. And the healing effects of the treatment will last over two to three months. This should be enough time for your anal fissure(s) to heal.
