What happens during a gait assessment? icon plus
Your consultant will carry out a general physical assessment to check how well your child is walking for their age. They will observe:
- your child's speed, stride and balance as they walk into a room
- how they walk heel-to-toe in a straight line
- how they hop in one place
- how they bend their knee
- how they touch their finger to their nose (dexterity)
They will also record height, weight and temperature and examine heart, lungs, abdomen and motor skills. If your consultant suspects gait problems, they may ask for more tests such as MRI scans or X-rays. They may also check for specific issues, such as knock knees and bow legs.
